Bellfield Socks
These socks worked in the round from the top down. The cuff is 1x1 twisted rib with Medallions set into it. The leg is a stretchy lace pattern. The Medium size has 2 repeats round the leg and the Large size has three. The heel flap is worked flat in slip stitch which continue for the heel turn. Stitches are picked up along the edges of the heel flap for the gusset. The gusset and foot are then worked in the round towards the toe, with the lace continuing along the top of the foot and the sole worked in stocking stitch. After the toe shaping the sock is closed by grafting the stitches together.
This lace stitch is ideal for socks as it creates a bias in the fabric giving it structure and elasticity. It has a smooth texture making it comfortable to wear in shoes. Although these are dainty, lacy socks they have a hard wearing slip stitch heel and a sturdy toe.
So that the lace stitches show up nicely, choose yarn that has a solid of semi-solid colour rather than stripes or too much variegation.
