I designed these boot socks with Morris dancers in mind. The mid calf version of the sock is perfect for wearing under Doc Marten style boots and the stretchy rib construction means that it fits snugly and comfortably - just the thing for dancing and walking comfort. The longer kilt sock is unfussy and the stretchy rib means the sock stays up without garters.

The recommended yarn is 75% wool, 25% nylon or polyamide sock wool (4ply/fingering) for its warmth, durability and lightness.

The suggested gauge is 28 st and 40 rows to 10cm over stockinette stitch using interchangeable circular needles (suggested 16in or longer)

The kilts socks require 1 x 100g ball of the recommended yarn.

Both styles are unisex and employ a springy rib stitch over the leg and instep that accommodates a wide range of sizes. I’ve created a women’s size 5 right up to men’s 11 using this pattern by varying the leg and foot length. The heel is formed using German short row technique and the toe is closed with knitted graft technique to provide a seamless construction throughout.

The longer version has extra stitches at cast on to accommodate the width of the calf and is designed to fit under the knee. These stitches are reduced mid-calf to the same number as the shorter version and the socks are identical in construction from thereon.
