The Bernie sweater is a soft and stretchy sweater in rib.
The sweater is worked bottom up. The body is first worked in the round and then separated into front and back. The individual pieces are finished separately by working back and forth. Front and back are knit together at the shoulders and the stitches are cast off with a 3rd needle. The rib pattern hits the correct stitch at the shoulder and you get a neat transition.
The Bernie sweater has buttons at the neckline for a nostalgic feel. The button band is worked in double face and is sewn to the sweater with mattress stitch. You then pick up stitches around the armhole openings for the sleeves, which are worked to your desired length. The sleeves are designed to be extra long and folded double.
As the sweater is worked in rib, it can be perfectly adjusted to your desired fit when steam ironing it. It is important though that the gauge is correct; if you knit too loose, the sweater loses its fit.
Size guide:
Choose a size that is approx. 10 cm wider (positive ease) than your chest circumference. As the sweater is rather stretchy, it fits with a narrower or wider range of motion, depending on the desired result.
The stated measurements on the front page are for the finished garment.
