Approximately 60, 100, 125 yards #4 worsted weight yarn in the color of your choice. Try Red Heart Super Saver in “Burgundy”, “Grey Heather”, or “Soft White”. Alternatives are Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn, or Loops and Threads “Impeccable” yarn from Michael’s.
5mm (H) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
4mm (G) hook
Scissors
Yarn needle
Stitches Used:
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
Additional Terms:
Spike st: using relaxed tension, insert hook into front loop of stitch from 2 rows below, draw up a loop, complete as you would a regular single crochet.
FLO = front loop only
RS = Right Side
WS = Wrong Side
sp/sps = space/spaces
st/sts = stitch/stitches
prev = previous
sk = skip
Gauge:
12 sc in 4” using 5mm hook
Measurements:
Child: 9” long by 3” tall
Adult Small/Medium: 11” long by 4” tall
Adult Large/X-Large: 12” long by 4” tall
Additional Notes:
-Ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as a stitch.
-Use relaxed tension especially when working the spike stitches or your piece will start to roll in on itself. A little “rolling” is expected but it should easily flatten out by the time you add the scalloped trim.
-I have included “right side” and “wrong side” references to help you keep things straight when cutting and reattaching your yarn (after row 8 for adult sizes, and after row 6 for child size). This step of cutting and re attaching the yarn is purely cosmetic. I like the “right side” of my work facing as often as possible because it looks more professional in my opinion.
