Bertechildis is a seaman’s scarf with Estonian lilies, cables, and a crochet chain edging worked in two pieces from the bottom up and grafted together. The pattern assumes that you know how to cast on provisionally, knit nupps, graft and read charts.

I don’t know the exact yardage but estimate that it could take anywhere between 320-410 m / 350-450 yards. Consider knitting the center rib in stripes or a coordinating colour if you’re unsure that you’ll have enough yarn. Conversely, if you have a lot of yarn, the scarf is easily lengthened by knitting more repeats of the lilies.

Bertechildis was a Merovingian queen whose name struck me as particularly inelegant (which is quite a feat, given her contemporaries Galswintha, Faileube and Wulfefundis) and thus for some reason I thought it would be funny if she lent her name to this delicate small scarf.
