BERTIE BONNET
Please note: Yarn may be a lightweight worsted or DK weight and is listed in ounces/grams on the pattern. Gauge is listed for the brim portion. The gauge changes with the yarn and needle change to: 4 stitches and 6 rows on size US 8/ 5mm needles with stockinette stitch and a single strand of yarn.
The fulling process determines the final size of the hat so that the brim fits over the head ear-to-ear.
The Bertie Bonnet is a knitted and fulled bonnet of a prairie girl or French hand-sewn shape, offered in two sizes. Model shown is size LG and has ribbon ties and embroidered accents (very brief description of embroidery included in pattern.)
This pattern uses two strands of yarn held together as one for the brim portion then changes to a single strand of yarn and smaller needles for the rise and crown. Started by knitting in rows on a flat piece, the shaping eventually changes to circular knitting for the puffed effect and decreasing which sweetly shapes the crown at the back of the bonnet.
Your imagination takes over for embellishing and your choice of ribbon for the ties can dress the dearie up or down. Other touches may be added in the form of beads, sequins, needle felting, embroidery, etc.
Perfect for a winter baby gift, the size SM bonnet is absolutely precious. More photos and discussions may be found at the Ambrosia Cottage group here on Ravely under the ‘Bertie Bonnet’ thread as they appear.
