MATERIALS
Yarn: Fingering/sock weight yarn + Lace weight mohair or Sport weight yarn. You’ll need a total of about 260 yards of Fingering/sock yarn plus 260 yards of Lace weight mohair, or 260 yards of Sport weight yarn.
For our sample, we used one color of sock yarn throughout, and changed the mohair color at regular intervals to play with different color combinations. You could use a single color of mohair throughout and change the color of your sock yarn or make the cowl in a single color.
If you’re using bits and pieces from your stash, we recommend starting with at least 110 yds/100m/10 gr of each of eight colors of laceweight silk/mohair yarn. This ensures you’ll have plenty to experiment with color combinations.
The sample was made with the following:
Hand Dyed Diva Homegrown Sock (80% Superwash Shaniko Wool, 20% Nylon; 400 yds/336 m per 100 gr skein): 1 skein Retro Rainbow (A)
Berroco Aerial (65% Superkid Mohair, 35% Silk; 284 yds/260 m per 25 gr ball): 1 ball each of 3411 Tea Rose, 3433 Copper, 3442 Ocean, and 3441 Lagoon Rowan Kidsilk Haze (70% Mohair, 30% Silk; 229 yds/210 m per 25 gr ball): 1 ball each of 0597 Jelly, 0600 Dewberry, 0666 Alhambra, and 0612 White
Needles: US 5 (4 mm) circular needles 24” long and 2 double pointed needles, or size needed to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle
GAUGE
22 sts and 30 rows = 4” in Stockinette stitch with one strand each of Homegrown Sock and Aerial held together. Save time by taking time to check gauge.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Circumference: 22”
Height: 9”
NOTE
You’ll begin this cowl by knitting the center panel as a long strip. The color blocking is created by changing the color of the mohair yarn. The ends of the strip are sewn together. Then you will pick up stitches along the edges of the cowl and knit the top and bottom borders in the round. An I-cord is threaded through eyelets in the top border as a drawstring.
Arrange your mohair colors in an order that pleases you, then label them B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and I. Or take a more\ spontaneous approach and change color at random!
