No specific gage is needed for this pattern. All you need to do is try it on as you go. Changing yarn weight and needle size would also no pose a problem.

This adult size was made from 3 Skeins of undyed handspun alpaca yarn, from a local farm, but any worsted wool would do. Natural fibres are a must, however, for cold Norther winters, because only sheep’s wool and alpaca is warm when wet and your breath will dampen the fabric. Alpaca has the added advantage of being hypoallergenic. If that is too expensive, I made 2 similar neckwarmers for my son with Patons Classic Wool.
