Inspired by the myriad of forks, also called bifurcations, that grow along the canes and branches of autumn sage plants, this hat is worked in a spiral without joining rounds through the body and in joined rounds for the brim.

Color coded rounds in body instructions indicate similar stitch sequences as the post stitches shift along with the natural spiral of working in a continuous round to create fluidly connected and branching texture.

Photos and a link to an informal video tutorial are included in the pattern to illustrate post stitches as well as a detailed size chart that may also help estimate finished size with varying yarn weights. Remember that most people like a hat to fit with 1-2” of negative ease!

STITCHES & TECHNIQUES:

• Half double crochet
• Working in the round

GAUGE:

Rounds 1–8 should measure approximately 3.5” (9 cm) across the diameter of the spiral when laid flat.
