Washing and gently blocking is very important for the finished look of this hat, as it relaxes the cables and gives the finished fabric a soft, lofty feel. Gauge is not critical since the hat is loose and slouchy, but you should try for 12 to 14 sts over 4 inches in rib pattern with smaller needles for the ribbed brim.
