Big Loopy Hat
Pattern has been tech-edited and test-knit
About this pattern
This hat gets its name from the fun and easy loop stitch. Worked in a super-bulky yarn, it knits up quickly and is sure to keep your head warm all winter. Add a pretty faux fur pompom for even more pizazz. Instructions are included for beanie, toque, and slouchy versions.
Yarn
Malabrigo Rasta super-bulky: 100% merino single ply; 150 grams (5.29 ounces); 90 yards (82 meters). Shown in “Solis” colourway.
Yardage
Approximately 80 (90, 100) yards / 73 (82, 91) m. Yardage is based on a 9 (9½, 10)“ / 22.5 (24, 25.5) cm toque; slouchy or beanie versions will require different yardages than stated.
Needles
6.5 mm (US 10) and 9 mm (US 13) 16” (40 cm) circ. needles. Use 24” (60 cm) cable for magic loop crown shaping (or DPNs if you prefer).
Notions
Tapestry needle, stitch markers, pompom (optional)
Gauge
9 sts and 10 rows in stockinette = 4” (10 cm); and 9 sts / 20 rows in loop stitch = 4” (10 cm) on 9 mm (US 13) needles.

Final Measurements
Unstretched circumference: 18 (21, 24)“ / 50 (52.5, 55) cm; height: 9 (9 ½, 10 ½)” / 22.5 (24, 26) cm from brim to crown.

Pattern Notes
Hat begins with a tubular (Italian) cast-on and ribbed brim, followed by the easy and addictive loop stitch. Crown shaping is worked with paired ssk and k2tog decreases. Link to a video tutorial for the tubular (Italian) cast-on provided in the pattern.
