A cosy hooded scarf with bold, easy cables, in stocking & moss (seed) stitch, perfect for snowy walks or more glamorously, for wearing to a night at the opera, most certainly with a full length black evening cape to make a sweeping entrance - oh la! la! I designed this hood because I have long hair which I wear mostly up in a clip, hats in winter, snow and rain don’t go over this, a hood is the perfect solution. It is a good sized hood, hence the name - Big Red Riding Hood. Fear not if up do’s are not an issue for you, instructions are included for making the hood smaller. Either way this hood keeps your hair, whatever its length, looking snappy if you are dashing out in showery or windy weather, and so allowing you to arrive at your destination still looking human when you unveil your locks.

This has been knit with two strands of the suggested yarn held together. I used 6 balls (1140 metres) of James C Brett Aztec yarn which is an Acrylic and Alpaca mix of Aran (worsted) weight.

This can also be knit with a single strand of bulky yarn which achieves the same gauge as suggested, use larger or smaller needles to obtain the correct gauge. If using a single strand for this pattern then half my quantities, approximately 600 metres, should be sufficient. Gauge is 13 stitches over 20 rows of stocking stitch using 7 mm needles.

This pattern has been knit in one size, but can easily be made larger or smaller for the hood; the scarf can also be made longer or shorter. I give information about adjusting these areas in the pattern. Pattern instructions are written and charted.
