Bijou is a lace shawl with 3 big different motifs which are related to each other.
Bijou is the perfect shawl if you are new to lace knitting.
There is just enough lace to keep you interested, it’s not too complicated and Bijou combines knitting traditions from Shetland, Estonia and Orenburg. (Russia)
The straight edges will keep the focus on the design of the big motifs in the panels which are bordered by a lace mesh pattern.
I’ve added beads for some extra glamour and sparkle.

Bijou is knitted in garter stitch and the lace pattern is created by yarn over’s and knitting stitches together.
The lace pattern is knitted in the uneven rows. The even rows are knitted, except for some parts where the pattern shows you differently.

The pattern has charts as well as written instructions and extra photo’s and charts for some of the used thechniques.
The shawl is knitted in 2 parts. The first half starts with a provisional cast on, from there you’ll knit towards the end. For the second half you’ll pick up stitches from the cast on and knit the charts again.
There are 3 charts, A, B and C.
Depending on how much yarn or how long you’d like your shawl, you can leave out or add chart A in the second half.

You’ll need 1000 - 1500 meters of 2-ply lace yarn,
I’ve used 1 skein of Lofty Lace from Great British Wool.
This is a 2-ply lace yarn made of 50% wool, 40% mohair and 10% silk. This yarn is hand dyed and comes in skeins of 1500 meters.
For more information about the yarn and colours, see
www.greatbritishwool.nl

The shawl on the photo’s is knitted with 1000 meters of Lofty Lace and consists of one chart A and two times chart B and C.
This shawl is 60 cm wide and 170 cm long after washing and blocking.
(Pattern calls for chart A knitted twice, you’ll get app. 190 cm long)
It is knitted on 2.75 mm circular needle and you’ll need a bit of waste yarn and crochet hook 4 mm for the provisional cast on.
There are 760 beads in the shawl, I’ve used rocailles 9/0 beads.
If you don’t like knitting with beads, you can easely leave them out.

Gauge is not importend for this shawl.
