Birch is a fitted hat pattern featuring all-over herringbone stitch. A classic design, this versatile wardrobe staple is perfect for both casual and fancier occasions. It gets its name from Birch Coffee on E 27th Street in New York City—a cozy and intimate coffee shop where a treasured friendship bloomed and blossomed.

Birch is available in six sizes.

Yarn
• 1 skein of DK-weight yarn (solids and tonals will work best)

Suggested Needles
• Brim: U.S. 4 (3.5mm)
• Body: U.S. 10 (6.0mm)
or sizes needed to obtain gauge

Please note, herringbone stitch is stretchy once knit, but is quite tight as you’re knitting it. It requires a larger needle size than what is typically called for with a DK-weight yarn.

Gauge
Gauge is critical to success for this pattern.
