These socks have a lacy repeating pattern that resembles the beautiful Richmond Birdwing butterflies. The top edge features a pattern made of gathered dropped stitches that also look like butterflies.

This pattern works best with a smooth yarn in a solid colour – you will need up to 100 gms of 4 ply / fingering sock yarn and 2.75 mm (US size 2) needles.
Written for a medium size women’s foot size, but the length of foot and sock leg can be altered.

The pattern begins with an easy provisional cast-on, at the ball of the foot, to work the toe on two needles, before continuing with 4 dpns or 2 circulars. The short rows are simple, with no ”wrap and turns”.
If you like toe-up socks, but are not sure about magic cast-ons – try these instead.
