The Birichen Shawl is a triangular-shaped shawl, worked flat and from left to right, with an all-over abstract cable design. It also has an i-cord edge.

The Birichen Shawl is inspired by the rural landscape I was surrounded by on my visit to Sutherland, Scotland in December 2023. Every morning I would have my morning coffee stood at the back door. To my left, I could see rolling hills, sprinkled with snow. And to my right, flowing water in the distance. I wanted to recreate this sight in knitting, and, with the use of abstract cables, I felt a sense of the rolling hills and flowing water that I became so familiar with.

Difficulty
This pattern has a relatively simple construction, with a textured cable design that looks impressive but is simple to achieve. This pattern would be ideal for a motivated beginner who wants to upskill and explore working cables, and above.

Sizing
This pattern comes in one size; however, the number of repeats can be worked more/fewer times to adjust the size of your shawl to suit you!

Cabled fabric: 23 sts x 30 rows in 10 x 10 cm/ 4 x 4 inches (blocked)

Suggested Yarn
200g/ 480m of DK-weight yarn.

This pattern has been designed to use 2 skeins of yarn - one for your increasing section, and the second of the decreasing section in order to optimise your yarn meterage.
