Birken-socks
“There is nothing worse than socks that do not fit!
Enter the ‘Birken-Sock’. Simple 2 x 2 ribbing that retains its elasticity, wearing after wearing. Hourglass heel that is easy to replace, great in a contrast color because it squares off around the heel. Simple to construct, anatomically shaped toe. And, the pattern comes in increment sizing, not a couple of averages, along with the percentages used in shaping.“
Pattern is written for two gauges, 8 st/in or 6.5 st/in. Measurements are given by percentages, but example numbers are given for seven sizes at 6.5 st/in and for nine sizes at 8 st/in. Pattern instructions for “Fancy Birken-Socks” also included, with charts for three color-stranded patterns.
As a rule of thumb, adult sizes require 4-6 oz in fine yarns, 6-8 oz in medium yarns, 8-10 oz in heavy yarns, 10-12 oz in bulky yarns.
