During a lunar eclipse, you see the Earth’s shadow creeping across the moon’s face. First the shadow appears as a dark lens, until the it completely covers the moon. Then the shadow on the moon’s face can suddenly change: instead of dark, it appears red - a Blood Moon.

Eclipses hold a special fascination across cultures and religions throughout history. In the Book of Joel, for example, it says “the sun will turn into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and
terrible day of the Lord comes.”

This shawl has the shape of a half moon and takes its colour inspiration from the blood red an eclipsed moon appears to have. Working from the straight edge, you create a crescent using short rows in a combination of garter and stocking stitch. The fun of working the many half moons that form the striking edging is saved until last.

The shawl sample photographed for this pattern is knitted using mohair/silk yarn from Dandelion Yarns. These colours are available as a limited number of kits from Makeri14, where you can also find assorted colours from Stockholm Woolery.

Note on metrage/yardage: If you are working precisely to gauge, you can just pull this shawl off with 2 balls of yarn (one of each colour). However, if you wind up working any looser, you will end up needing to play yarn chicken with Yarn A, not be able to work the full number of stripes described and/or use more of Yarn B. This will depend on how tight or loose you knit. If you want to be safe, go for 3 balls, but if you have 2 at home and can’t wait to cast on and you’re willing to improvise - go for it! You can always add a little of a third colour for the bind-off - a contrasting colour could frame the shawl nicely.

Note on colours: You can go for 3 skeins in 3 different colours as well if you prefer, and play around with colour combinations. For example, you can make the stripes in two colours and the blocks in between in the third, or one block in each colour and stripe randomly between.

Note on yarn: The original yarn is 400 m per 100 g. If substituting, try and stay close to that, with a preferences to going a bit thicker yarn rather than thinner. The structural design of the shawl might be lost if the yarn is too thin.
