The Bloomfield Shawl is a winged-triangle shawl knit in a simple one-color brioche pattern. The pattern is simple and easy to memorize, making it perfect for relaxed couch knitting. It’s an ideal way to get your brioche skills ready for more complicated projects.

Its exaggerated winged shape means it’ll cuddle securely on your shoulders and its corners fall in twirly spirals. It’s lightweight enough to pack into a tote or suitcase and will happily come along with you, whether on vacation or to a chilly movie theater.

The Bloomfield Shawl was designed to play with color. It’s a project right at the intersection of knitting and painting, pairing varigated colors with gentle fades for a soft, blended effect. It’s designed for a three-color fade, but you’re the artist here. Choose more colors or just one if you prefer. Eliminate the fade sections entirely for a more stripey look or make them even longer for a gentler gradation. Choose a wild array of contrasting colors or opt for a muted, tonal effect. This shawl is your canvas - paint what you like!

Yarn:
Blue, plum, and green Bloomfield:
Forest Fiber Arts Merino Single Ply Sock 400 yards (366 meters)/100 grams; 100% Superwash Merino Wool, fingering weight in Sea Monster (200 yards / 183 meters), Pressed Flowers (400 yards / 366 meters), and Swamp Monster (400 yards / 366 meters).

Blue-gray Bloomfield:
Polka Dot Sheep Iron Horse 438 yards (401 meters) / 100 g; 75% superwash merino and 25% mulberry silk, fingering weight in Scenic Byway (200 yards / 183 meters), Silver Bow (400 yards / 366 meters), and Storm Chaser (400 yards / 366 meters).

Color A (200 yards / 183 meters)
Color B (400 yards / 366 meters)
Color C (400 yards / 366 meters)

When selecting a palette of yarns, I recommend looking for options with plenty of drape. Single ply wools, as well as plied yarns including silk, alpaca, and viscose are all excellent choices. Grippier and bouncier fibers like non-superwash wools and sock blends with nylon will create a tighter fabric with less drape.

Needles

Gauge
16 sts x 48 rows = 4 inches / 10 centimeters in brioche stitch pattern (Brk, Sl1YO) after blocking. Note: since the shawl is worked in brioche stitch, the row gauge can be difficult to count. Each knit “V” represents 2 rows of the pattern

Finished measurements
76 inch / 193 cm wingspan. 30 inch / 76 cm center depth.
