This shawl begins with a square center panel worked in the round from the center point out. The two rectangular side panels are then worked outward from this center panel. Lace motifs are presented in chart form ONLY.

You will need approximately 800 yards of fingering-weight yarn to knit this pattern as written. Choose a yarn with a good drape that will block well to show off the lace patterning most successfully. The sample was knit using a 50/50 silk/superwash merino blend, fingering-weight yarn.

This design is part of a larger Ogham-inspired collection. Heather is a low-growing shrub which is known for the beautiful dainty pale purple flowers that cover the plant throughout the summer. It is a plant well-loved by bees and honey made from heather was often used to flavor mead or ale during the Celtic period. The scent of blooming heather was thought to open a portal into the faery world, and it was considered lucky to carry or wear heather blooms, as the flower would protect against violence and attacks.
