Inspired by the Blue Beetle Volkswagen Bug in Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files, these fun and eclectic mitts are a great way to try out some new color combos. This pattern was first released as an MKAL on the Lattes & Llamas blog, and is now available as a full pattern on Ravelry with both written and charted instructions!

This pattern was released as a free MKAL on the Lattes & Llamas blog in 4 parts. Links to the free MKAL clues are below. The MKAL included only the written instructions. The paid pattern available here includes both written and charted instructions as well as notes on adjusting for different weights of yarn.

The handwarmers are one-size-fits-most as they incorporate a lot of ribbing. I used 6-8 grams of each of the 5 colors (so about 40 yards of each color) to complete the pair. You don’t need a mini-set, this is a good project for stash busting if you’ve got some random balls of leftover fingering weight yarn around. I worked them on US1 needles. I also used beads, but those are optional. That said, I think when in doubt, put a bead on it.

Sample is worked in Lattes & Llamas Mini Sets in the colorway “Swashbuckler”.

As you work through the sections, you will want the 2 colors used in each section to contrast. However, colors from one section don’t need to contrast with all other colors. If you line your colors up as ABCDE, any 2 colors that touch should contrast. So, A should contrast with B, B should contrast with A and C, and so on. However, A does not need to contrast with C, D, or E, and B doesn’t need to contrast with D or E.
