Two-in-one pattern
The Blue Jay gift bag pattern offers two motifs; a Blue Jay and a tree. For those who are feeling particularly adventurous, there is also an empty chart and some tips on how to create your own motifs.
The 10-page PDF includes: charts, detailed instructions on how to read filet crochet charts, how to work the technique and tips on how to create your own motifs. If you would like to line the finished bag, I have provided a link to a tutorial by crochetlovemelbourne
Skill level: intermediate or advanced beginner. Filet crochet is an easy technique which uses only the basic chain and double crochet stitches (US terms) but the thin yarn and small hook size might make this project a bit fiddly for an absolute beginner.
Yarn: 30-40g of any laceweight cotton crochet thread. I’ve used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush. A good substitute is Aunt Lydias Classic Crochet thread size 10. If you choose any other brand you might need to adjust the amount and the hook size. Your personal tension will also affect the yarn quantities used.
Color: The motif will be clearer if you choose a solid color.
Hook: the size of the hook will depend on your tension and choice of yarn. I used a 1mm hook with Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush. My testers used 1,25mm and 1,5mm hooks. Both worked nicely though with 1,5mm the motif was not quite as defined and the bag turned out a bit bigger.
Size: the example shown here is 20cm x 15 cm (8 x 6in)
