Growing up, one of my family’s favorite day trips was to wander along sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway is a winding road that twists & turns its way through the Blue Ridge Mountains, a portion of the Appalachian Mountain region of the eastern United States. (Side note: it’s pronounced “App-UH-latch-un”). We’d load up a picnic and generations of family members would caravan to beautiful locations like Mabry’s Mill. In this idyllic setting, we’d spread a cloth on one of the many picnic tables available, and enjoy the cool breeze, stunning vistas & great company. The mountains around here live up to their name. Most days, depending on the weather, you can see layers and layers of blue-tinged mountain ranges in the distance. Often, the mountains peek out from a low cloud, giving them a mystical, other-worldly feel.
The Blue Ridge Mitts echo these soft blue layers of mountains, rising and falling. Their subtle textured pattern brings to mind the subtle differences in colors the eye picks up as the mountains recede in the distance. These mitts are designed to help a beginner learn to follow a chart, but a seasoned knitter could whip up a pair in no time. Included are hints & tips, and basic chart-reading directions. I’ve also included the directions for full mittens, if you want those fingers covered. If you’re a newer knitter, or a life-long-learning knitter like me, read all the hints & tips before you cast on. You’ll find my “secret” for never having to re-do my cast on because it twisted!
