Bluebird of Happiness Mittens
Free for 26 May 2022 as a gift on my birthday. No code needed
The Bluebird is a symbol of hope and happiness in many cultures around the world. I hope making these brings you joy whether for yourself or to give as a gift to someone else. The cute little bluebird in my pictures is a free pattern by fellow South African Linda and can be found here. I combined the blue from my mittens with a mohair to make my little bird.
Materials
Needles
2.75mm / US 2 at least 80cm / 30” long or size to obtain gauge (for magic loop)
or DPNs in the correct size if you prefer.
Yarn
I have knitted these out of fingering weight yarn from my stash. Use whatever fingering weight you have in your stash just check your gauge and adjust needle size depending on your gauge.
Recommended is a fingering weight yarn 100g; 400m / 437yds
Samples knitted in:
Yarn from my stash self-dyed 100g; 400m /437yds
Total yardage used: ~ 50-60g
Notions
2 Stitch markers
Waste yarn to hold the thumb gusset
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge
30 stitches and 43 rows over 10cm/4” stocking stitch in the round, blocked
Sizes
These mittens will fit hands approximately 9-10cm. See diagram of where to measure them. If you would like them slightly bigger, I suggest slightly thicker yarn for example 330g/100m and a size 3mm needle. You could also experiment with DK yarn and 3.5mm needles for a bigger size. The final mittens will depend on your gauge so be willing to experiment, the finished mittens will usually fit someone.
