Boanny Starns is a Shetlandic term that means ‘Pretty Stars’ and was suggested by Lorraine, one of my previous testers, a born and bred Shetlander.
I loved the name and there was no question about using it, except… one of the motifs I had used was a flower, not a star!
After much deliberation, I decided to swap the flower motif for another star. But I really liked the version with the flower as well…
So I simply wrote up two patterns - Boanny Starns and Boanny Flooers (which I hope means pretty flowers!!).

You will receive two separate patterns, one for each.

Each pattern includes a chart to work the hat with a light background and another one to work it with a dark background.

SIZE
Depending on your exact tension, after blocking it will fit an average adult head with an approx. circumference of 22 inches and length from brim to crown of 8 - 8.5 inches.

YARN & YARDAGE
I have used Drops Nord, which is a beautifully soft blend of alpaca & wool, with a little polyamide for strength.
You will need two highly contrasting colours - I have used Ivory and Deep Ocean.
A 50g (170m) ball of each should be enough to just about make two hats, with the colours reversed in the second one. (If you want to make two hats the same, you will probably just run out of the background colour if you only have one ball.)

Although I have designed it to be made with just two colours to give a striking effect, it could also be made fairisle style, with several colours.
