This design, using tapestry/intarsia crochet techniques, showcases a charming yacht sailing across the sea, with the sun shining brightly and bird silhouettes in the sky. Part of my beach-themed blanket, this versatile square can also be used for various projects like tote bags, decorative pillows or wall hangings, adding a touch of seaside charm to any creation. The pattern includes instructions on how to turn this square into an adorable small cushion cover.

⚠ It is written in English only, using US terminology. If you would prefer UK terminology, please let me know and I can provide this. ⚠

ABOUT THE PATTERN

The pattern includes both detailed written instructions and a comprehensive chart, ensuring you have all the guidance needed to bring this picturesque scene to life. The written instructions provide specific advice on when and how to carry the different coloured yarns to maintain a neat and professional finish. Using DK yarn, a 4mm hook, and a tension of 18 sc x 18 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm, my square measures approximately 25 cm x 25 cm after blocking. If your tension is different, or you use a different weight of yarn or hook size, your square may turn out smaller or larger. If you are incorporating this square into my beach blanket, it does not really matter as long as you are consistent; your final blanket will simply end up larger or smaller. The finished square, including the border, has 45 stitches on each side plus 1 stitch in each corner.

SKILL LEVEL

I have assigned an intermediate skill level to this pattern, although it could also suit an adventurous advanced beginner. The entire pattern is made from single crochet stitches and chains. However, it involves multiple colour changes, with up to 8 bobbins of colour in use at one time. The pattern includes instructions for interpreting both the written pattern and the chart, but some familiarity with reading patterns would be useful. You must also be able to maintain consistent tension.

MATERIALS NEEDED

DK yarn in chosen colours. For the pattern, I used King Cole Big Value DK (50g/145m). Exact colours and yardage used for the pattern are given within the instructions:
⛵ Colours for your chosen colourway. For example, light blue for the sky, dark blue for the sea, bright blue for the boat, red for the large sail, pink for the boat accents and flag, yellow for the sun and pole, and white for the small sail (approximately 38g (105m) total).
⛵ White for the border
4mm crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Blocking board and/or pins
Yarn bobbins (optional)
If using for a cushion, you will also need a 25cm x 25cm cushion pad

Feel free to explore variations by swapping out yarn and hook sizes to achieve a different outcome, and get creative with experimenting with various colours.
