Bob the stegosaurus
This stegosaurus was inspired by the hand dyed yarns from Dancing Leaf Dyeworks. These soft and colorful yarns make beautiful toys!

Bob is knit in the round from the bottom up. The arms are knit first and then set aside to be attached later. Next each leg is knit and then joined together to work the body. The arms are then joined before knitting the shoulders, neck and head. Stitches for the muzzle are provisionally worked with waste yarn which is later removed. The live stitches are then picked up and worked in the round to form the muzzle. The plates and tail are knit separately and sewn on. The spikes are worked as i-cords from stitches picked up on the tail. While the sample stegosaurus has safety eyes, instructions are given for the embroidered eyes if you prefer.
Materials
Yarn
For Bob - Boogie from Dancing Leaf Dyeworks, bulky weight, 106 yards/97 m. The sample used about 86 yds/79 m in dark brown for the stegosaurus and about 21 yds/19 m in dark green for the plates and spikes.
For Bob’s scarf - Sock Hop from Dancing Leaf Dyeworks, fingering weight, 373 yds/341 m. Sample scarf used about 41 yds/38 m.
Needles
For Bob - US size 8/5 mm or size needed to obtain gauge below. You’ll need two sets of double pointed needles (one set for knitting and one for holding stitches).
For Bob’s scarf - US size 4/3.5 mm or size needed to obtain gauge below. 24” circular or straight.
Gauge
Stegosaurus gauge - 3.5 sts by 4.5 rows over 1”/2.5 cm lightly stuffed. Make sure your fabric is tight enough so the stuffing doesn’t show through when stuffed at this gauge. I recommend at least two to three sizes smaller than the recommended needle size for your yarn.
Scarf gauge - 4.5 sts by 7 rows over 1”/2.5 cm lightly blocked.
Miscellaneous- darning needle for weaving in ends; about 2 oz/56 g of wool stuffing (or stuffing of your choice); 10 or 12 mm safety eyes or a scrap of fingering or DK weight yarn or embroidery floss in black for embroidered eyes; two 1/2”/1.3 cm squares of felt to secure safety eyes; one 6”/15 cm scrap of yarn (referred to as waste yarn) to hold stitches for the muzzle.
