This shawl was knit with yarn sent to me as part of a challenge to design with handspun wool. The fibre was dyed by Inglenook Fibers , and spun to a heavy fingering/sport weight yarn by judycollette .

I chose a simple ripple stitch pattern and placed it in a central triangular section. The garter ridges of the ripple stitch continue into the side panels of the shawl, and two stitches are increased inside each of the borders to create a wide wingspan that can be blocked into a crescent shape.

If you don’t have handspun, you can, of course, use commercial yarn. To achieve similar results to the sample, use a heavy fingering/sport weight yarn with a long colour change. The shape of the shawl and the combination of stitch patterns would lend itself to yarns of different weights and fibres, and I suggest you experiment (i.e., swatch) to find your ideal match between yarn and gauge.

• modified garter tab cast-on (explained in pattern);
• knit and purl;
• yo increase;
• kyok double increase;
• k2tog decrease;
• ssk decrease;
• cdd double decrease;
• lace bind-off (explained in pattern).

Errata
Rows 5 and 6 of the set-up rows should read as follows.

Row 5: K2, kyok, k to next marker, SM, k1, yo, k to 1 st before next marker, yo, k1, SM, k to last 3 sts, kyok, k2—6 sts increased.
Row 6: Knit, slipping markers as you come to them.
