Bogolanfini (Mudcloth) Headband
Bògòlanfini (mudcloth) is fabric dyed with fermented mud. Bògòlanfini is a traditional textile of the Bamana people of Mali in West Africa. The name means “earthcloth” (Bogo=earth, lan=by means of, fini=cloth); and there is meaning in the symbols represented on mudcloth. They reveal a person’s character or occupation, or the history of a village. Mudcloth is worn by hunters, serving as camouflage, as ritual protection and as a badge of status.
The Bògòlanfini headband / ear warmer is knit in the round, using colorwork. You will begin with a provisional cast on and finish the main side with a combination i-cord bind-off cast-on to continue with an alternating single row striped lining. The result is a headband that is fully reversible. You also have the option of using the included blank chart to chart your own design. Let your creativity soar! #bogolanfiniheadband
Tip: If you choose to use the chart to make a deeper headband, hat or cowl … you will repeat rows 1-32 of the chart.
