This hat requires 5 x 20g mini skeins of fingering yarn. You will be working with 3 strands of yarn at the same time for the entire project.

Bokashi is a Japanese term denoting a blurred or undefined outline or a border. In art, this term is often used for a gradation of colours.

The colour blending method used in this hat has been utilized by tapestry weavers for centuries. In the western world, it is called shading, and can be seen in both, traditional and modern tapestries. In Japan, the method is called Bokashi and used on very fine scale for Obi – a sash for kimono.

By working with multiple strands of yarn at once, and changing the colours of yarn one strand at a time, weavers around the world have been creating an infinite number of colours in their work. This weavers technique was invented by necessity when the available colours were limited, and passed down from generation to generation.

With this pattern, I would like to challenge you to look through your collection of yarn, and create a hat that is truly one of a kind. You may be pleasantly surprised to see how many hidden treasures await on your yarn shelf. I am looking forward to seeing your creation!
