BONBORI
ぼんぼり (from Japanese) - snow cave shaped lantern
This trapezoid style wrap is created through a series of slip stitch patterns that slowly grow throughout the fabric. Each repeat is transforming progressively width-wise, beginning with the bubble shape patterning playfully intertwining with the color changes as the look of this 3 dimensional fabric achieves depth. With each new section the bubbles expand, that is when their silhouette begins to remind of the special snow cave lanterns called “Bonbori”.

This pattern is part of first installment of seasonal “Adventures in Knitting” kits club with Fibre Space. The pattern went live on April 3 for club participants.
The yarn selected for this project is very special. Di Gilpin is a truly unique yarn company because they not only produce yarn but are “croft to couture”. They employ 90 highly skilled home-knitters based across Scotland. They have a core team, who live within a 15-mile radius, to create the one-off pieces and special commissions desired by private clients, fashion designers and the catwalk. Some of their big name clients include Nike and Topshop Unique. Now, their gorgeous yarn will be featured in an Olga Buraya-Kefelian design. Olga hand selected the colors below based on what would work beautifully for her design.
From Olga:
I have always been curious about how some yarns are made, and during my many years as a knitter, I have discovered that differently constructed yarns can affect stitch patterns differently. While working with the stitch pattern featured in this design, I wanted the stitches to be sturdy enough to support the 3-dimensional texture but also provide the fabric with the stitch definition that was easy to “read.” I have found that this soft Z-plied yarn made a lot of a difference in the finished fabric (whether it is knit in a tighter or a looser gauge), yet provided the best of both worlds – the bloom of the lambswool yarn and preserving the crisp look of the stitches. With an abundance of colors available within the palette, I was able to create a variety of combinations for every knitter!
This pattern will become available to general public on May 3!
