Bonby Haiku by Luke Smith
Designed to be functional and wearable - Bonby is your ‘one-piece for all’ knitted garment: cape, wrap, cowl or a simple snuggly blanket to take on your travels; Bonby is your travel-bag essential! Perfect for the stylish country rambler requiring warmth and ease; the urban explorer requiring a chic cape or wrap; and those of us Who just like to snuggle beneath wool.
Knitted with worsted weight yarn, Bonby is a perfectly warming Autumn to Winter knit, that knits up surprisingly rapidly.
Stripes and a small amount of simple colourwork allows for stash-busting potential and provides interest to the piece. A simple worked-flat construction and with three sizes offered (with the potential to mix and match between those), Bonby is easily customisable.
Construction
Bonby is worked flat in stocking stitch. Starting at the ‘left shoulder’ and the main colour, you begin by working ribbing. The piece is then worked horizontally across in St st, progressing along the ‘back section’ and finishing at the ‘right shoulder’. A simple striping and colourwork sequence is also incorporated with a contrast colour yarn. The piece is simply wrapped around the body and secured with a button, bringing the left and right shoulder pieces together - alternatively, piece can be secured at centre-front or worn loose as a wrap/blanket. To finish, stitches are picked up and an i-cord bind off is applied. Simple and effective, you can wear this piece as a cape, wrap or scarf and use as a simple blanket/throw.
Blocked Gauge: 17 stitches and 22 Rows = 4” in St st
Small : 22” width and 50” length
Medium: 28” width and 54” length
Large: 32” width and 58” length
Note: the patterns allows you the freedom to ‘mix and match’ between sizes. For example, you may wish to CO for the large to provide a greater width to the garment but only require a small in length – this really is preference in terms of best-fit or how you wish to use your finished knit I.e. Blanket or Cape?!
Yarn: This piece is knitted with worsted weight yarn - Cascade 220 (201m/220yrds per 100g)
MC: 3 (3/4) skeins of Cascade 220 shown in Mineral Blue CC : 1 (2/2) skeins of Cascade 220 shown in Straw
Needles: ONE 5.5 mm circular of at least 32” (80cm length) to accommodate stitches - work is knitted flat. TWO 4.5mm Double Pointed Needles (DPNs).
Notions: ONE large button 25mm
Note: Any of the yarns used can be substituted for worsted weight variations that suit your preference. Similarly, this cape can be knitted in other weight yarns, though bear in mind size variations and the need to adjust needle size accordingly.
Skill level: great for the beginner looking to tackle a larger knitted piece or an introduction to striping and (basic) colourwork and techniques such as iCord bindoff. OR the knitter requiring a swift and straightforward knit that stash-busts and provides a functional knit upon completion.
Bonby: a beautiful Lincolnshire village, where I spent my youth - trekking amongst the fields and woodlands.
NOTE: SAMPLES SHOWN IN MEDIUM (BLUE/GOLD) and SMALL (CREAM/PINK).
