Bonny Bonnet
This is fun and quick knit bonnet great for little ones! I was looking for a hat that my daughter wouldn’t quickly pull off her head and that would also keep her ears warm in the colder weather. In the end after some experimenting I came up with this bonnet and so far it has been the only thing my daughter has tolerated on her head for more than 10mins.
Its a super quick knit perfect for gifting or to quickly whip up for your own children!
This design can be knit with either a Worsted or DK weight of yarn … however a DK weight will result in a slightly smaller size than stated in the pattern (this would be great for smaller babies).
What you will need:
Yarn
- 100g Worsted/DK weight Yarn (approx. 200m/220 yds). Yarn used in sample – A Hundred Ravens Yarns Worsted in the Wisdom, Justice & Love Colourway (211m/231yds) – Alternatively you can also use fingering weight yarn held double.
Needles
- 3.75mm (US5) & 4mm (US6) 32” circular for magic loop knitting in the round or DPNs for small circumference knitting.
Notions
- 1 Stitch Marker for marking the beginning of the round and additional markers for crown decreases (if you wish to use them).
- A tapestry needle for weaving ends.
Gauge
- Approximately 5.5 sts/inch in the main body pattern, un-stretched and un-blocked.
Size
- Baby/Toddler – Depth of hat measured from Brim to Hat decreases is approx. 6inches / 15.5cm, and the height of bonnet from the bottom open edge to top of Bonnet is approx. 7inches / 17cm.
- Toddler/Child – Depth of hat measured from Brim to Hat decreases is approx. 8.25inches / 21cm, and the height of the bonnet from bottom open edge to top of bonnet is approx. 8inches / 20cm.
Notes on Pattern:
- The finished bonnet is quite stretchy and will stretch to fit a lot of head sizes. The smallest size is great for babies and smaller toddlers as the bonnet is quite fitted so if they are sat in a stroller there isn’t a lot of excess fabric to deal with.
- The larger size is great for older children and is again very flexible (for reference the larger size can actually fit an adult).
- The easiest way to alter the pattern if you want the bonnet to be deeper is to knit extra rows in Garter Stitch before joining in the round.
