This design came from necessity. I had an 18 gallon tub of sock yarn stash and the lid just wouldn’t stay on even when I sat on it. So I poured it onto the floor, divided it into color groupings and started designing shawls, scarfs and baby blankets in ‘box in a box’ styling. Each piece is unique and fun and people at our sales love the variety of color choices. Lovely baby gifts in any color combination. I choose machine washable yarns for the baby blankets. I find it easiest to color balance to use 1 or 2 variegated yarns with 2 or more solids. Feel free to experiment, use your stash as your guide. You may want to buy 1 dominant yarn for each blanket and then stash the rest. The design is very geometric but the color layout of the boxes can be varied. It creates a dynamic design to have the width of each box be different from the width of the box on either side. Five sample blanket patterns are provided for both square and rectangle shapes.

Started on double pointed needles and then worked in the round in stockinette with slip stitch corners. Corners on the outer edge are knit to continue the element of the slip stitch design. The stockinette square center is easy to start and gives a defined color block for the hand-paint yarn. Pattern is given in 3 sizes: small, medium and large.
