Braided Lace Shawl

This is a light crescent shaped shawl which is mainly a mixture of squishy garter and interspersed braid style cables, that unravel down opening into small sections of lacework, through the body of this wrap into a twisted rib based lace border to finish it off. It has a relatively swift rate of increase to form the shape, with 4 stitches being increased on each (RS) row and 2 on each (WS) row throughout the pattern. It uses nearly 3 skeins of Fingering weight yarn, 2 for the main body & 1, preferably tonal or solid colour, for the lace border. For me this shawl has a very light fluffy romance of antiquity feel to it, with it’s pretty feminine braids and delicate lace, when an attachment to the land and sea swirled together with mystery, romance and a deeper meaning of life. So I chose to add a nod to the natural world as well with my colour choices that I used in my sample, selected from the beautiful soft and squishy Gardener Cottage Yarns, with speckles of coastal shades for the body and a neutral ashen shade for the border.

Knitting skills & techniques used:

Advanced Intermediate : Casting on, binding off, knitting, purling. Increases and decreases by making KFB, Knit2togethers, Slip Slip Knit, as well as working yarnovers and Central Double Decrease to create the patterning in the lace border and to actually shape the edges of the wrap as well as how to slip purl wise for bind off. It also involves working regular braid style cables, which are worked over 9 stitches. Stated as ‘Advanced Intermidiate’ due to long lace rows during the border.

Materials: Requires approx 1,040 metres / 1,138 yards Fingering weight yarn. The following yarn usage amounts are an approximate guide and includes the approximate yardage amounts I used of each colour. The yardage amounts shown are a little over what was actually used in view of rounding up to give you several grams room regarding what’s required for each of the 2 yarns.

Whilst any fingering weight yarn with good drape and stitch definition will work fine, for the sample I used Gardeners Cottage Yarn, ‘Deluxe’,
85% Superwash Merino, 15% Nylon, 437 yards (400 meters).

Yarn A : Beach Days, (speckled white) (amount used 680 meters / 744 yards)
Yarn B : Ash, (smokey blueish grey) (amount used 360 metres / 394 yards)

Needles: 3.75mm / US 5 (100cm cord length minimum)
Notions: cable needle / DPN, 12 stitch markers, tapestry needle / crochet hook ends

Gauge: 29 sts & 40 rows in Garter Stitch, 4” (10 cm), with 3.75 mm / US 5 needles (after blocking)
Gauge is not essential but can affect finished measurements / yarn usage. There is a risk you will run out of yarn if you fail to meet gauge, so if that is the case please make sure you have extra yarn to accommodate. If you are purchasing a Yarn Kit, meeting gauge is even more important to ensure you will have enough yarn from your kit
