Braiding Sweetgrass is inspired by Native American Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book of the same name. In it, she describes the tradition of dividing a sheaf of sweetgrass into threes and braiding it for use in basket-making. Braiding Sweetgrass socks are a classic design with three panels of lace, in which intertwined strands of yarn simulate the braided strands of grass.

The pattern is written for use with four double-pointed needles; however two circular needles or Magic Loop can also be used. Socks are knitted from the cuff down and feature stockinette, two simple lace patterns, round heel and wedge toe. The Kitchener stitch is used to seam the toe.

The skill level is suited to an intermediate level knitter familiar with basic sock construction.

The yarn shown in the sample is Kismet Fiber Works Simple Sock in the colorway Larc’s Song. Other fingering weight yarn, such as those listed above may be used. For best results, choose a yarn that has 80% wool and 20% nylon.

Gauge: 36 sts over 4” in the round in stockinette.

Finished size: After blocking, about 7.25” (18.4 cm) in foot circumference, 9” (22.8 cm) in length, from tip of toe to back of heel. To fit foot of about 8” (20.3 cm) circumference and about 9.75” (24.8 cm) length from toe to back of heel, or (on average) a shoe size of Ladies 6-9. Foot length and length of leg are easily adjustable.
