Brassica are group of plants from which, through selective breeding for thousands of years, we have developed many useful crops. Crops from Brassica strains are sometimes called cole crops—derived from the Latin caulis, denoting the stem or stalk of a plant. The produce that derived from Brassica include cruciferous vegetables, cabbages and mustard plants.

The most famous Brassica plant in Canada is canola (Brassica napus). Canola is cultivated for its oil and the by-products are used for animal feed. The fields around Calgary, Alberta are full of canola fields. They are resplendent with canola’s bright yellow flowers and fresh green stems from late June through July and August. It’s truly a sight to see, and it is the inspiration for this two-coloured lace and eyelets cowl.
