Brattleboro Ruana
Inspired by traditional Andean ponchos, this ruana can travel with you anywhere. It envelopes you with squishy garter stitch comfort with flattering vertical striping that looks terrific on every figure. Voluminous but not heavy, this fingering weight garment is a terrific layering piece.
Gauge: 24 sts & 48 rows = 4” /10 cm in garter stitch; gauge is not important, but a difference in gauge could affect the amount of yarn needed.
Yarn: Lana, Forest or Meadow (400 yds each): 2 skeins each of 4 colors -- A: Playa, B: Muy Oscura, C: Plateada, D: Gris; 1 skein in a contrasting pop color for border E: Ancho
Needles: US size 4/3.75mm -40” circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge & US size 2/2.75mm -32” circular needle (for picking up stitches)
Note: You will work the two symmetrical panels of your ruana flat and sideways from a provisional cast on at one sleeve edge towards the neckline. The first half uses regular symmetrical increases on either side of a center stitch (worked on the right side) and the second half uses regular symmetrical decreases on either side of a center stitch (worked on the wrong side) for invisible shoulder shaping that disappears into the garter stitch fabric.
