I designed this hat while sitting on a bluff on the Niagara escarpment overlooking Lake Michigan. It was an early fall day with a bit of chill in the air and there were a few white caps on the horizon. Just the kind of day for which sitting and knitting by the fire is made. The result is this warm and toasty cap celebrating the Great Lakes and American wool.

Skill: Experienced.

Size: 20”/51 cm (22”/56 cm) in circumference. (Both small and large hats pictured.)

Gauge: 32 sts = 4”/10 cm. in stranded pattern in the round
with larger needles.

Yarn: Sport weight – dark 100 yds/91 m; medium, 85 yds/78 m; light, 120 yds/110 m.

Sample used Swans Island 100% USA Rambouillet Wool.

Needles and notions: US Size 1 (2.50 mm) and US Size 3 (3.25 mm) for circular knitting or size to achieve gauge. Spare needle of same or smaller size than the smaller needle to use when removing the (optional) provisional cast on. Stitch markers, tapestry needle and a scrap of smooth cotton yarn measuring approximately four yards/meters for the provisional cast on.
