Breakwater Shawl
Like courses of quarried stones forming a rocky barrier against the sea’s waves which creates a region of untroubled waters, Breakwater’s mitred square edging encloses its garter stitch body.
As the geometric modular-knit edging evokes an Art Deco feel, this shawl also pays homage to Old Miami Beach’s Art Deco district by carrying the name of an iconic hotel there.
Breakwater is a shallow crescent shawl. The edging, worked first, is created by knitted garter welt mitred squares in two colours. Then stitches are picked up along the top edge, and short rows create the gentle curve of the shawl.
Notes about gauge:
One mitred square, blocked, measures 5.5 cm sq (2 1/8 in square)
It’s not essential to match the gauge given, but your gauge will affect the finished size and the amount of yarn you will use. Be sure to purchase extra yarn if you choose not to match gauge.
Required skills:
Knit, purl, ssk, sssk, picking up stitches, short rowing.
