Breezeblock Socks was the first pattern for the 2017 Sock Club and will be made available through Ravelry once the exclusivity period has passed.

I designed these socks for my first sock club in summer 2017. Australian summers can be brutal so I decided to make short, “air-conditioned” socks with a breezy openwork design.

Regardless of how much openwork a hand-knit sock has, it’s never going to cut it on a 45ºC day, so rather than pretending they can be worn in summer, I’ve decided to call them “inspired by summer” instead.

Breezeblock Socks (like breezeblocks themselves) are made up of a series of geometric open spaces. The patterned part is a simple k3, p1, rib, punctuated with eyelets. When worn, the eyelets and corresponding decreases stretch open to form a wavy, almost twisted pattern.

Knitted from the cuff down with a heel flap and gusset, a few simple variations to the stitch count keep the pattern centred. Using a second colour for the cuff, heel and toe lets you play with colour and contrast. The wedge toe is closed with Kitchener stitch.

Sizes are given using European sizing which is unisex. The stretchy nature of the pattern gives some leeway, so if you’re choosing between two sizes, go for the smaller one.
