Southeastern Ohio is paved with millions of locally made bricks. Historic Athens Blocks, manufactured from 1893-1917 line the streets of uptown Athens. The town of Nelsonville, just to the north, has its own unique and charming brick pattern, the Starbrick (1880-1937). These iconic bricks, and so many others, are enduring reminders of our strong Appalachian industrial heritage.

This pattern is written to be knit from the toe up in the round. There are two charts: Chart 1 is “ATHENS BLOCK” and is worked only across the sole stitches in a crazy hybrid stranded/mosaic method I developed that will be explained with instructions and photographs. Chart 2 is the “Starbrick” and is worked in stranded stockinette repeated on both the front and back of the leg. The instep is left to pool naturally to showcase this gorgeous yarn!
