This pattern is generated with diagonally shifted recurring waves (not recommended viewing for those who suffer from motion sickness). As your eye focuses on the design, the flat surface appears to heave and ripple. After a while, the whole world seems to shift like a ship at sea. This effect is intensified by the degree of contrast between the two colors. Bridget Riley (born 1931), one of the most famous op-art artists, used this effect for her Arrest series in 1965.
