A saintly woman, named Brigid, was asked to sit next to an ailing Irish chieftain to offer solace. As she spoke to him she began to weave a distinctive rustic cross out of rushes from the floor. This later became known as St Brigid’s Cross. It is believed that this warded off, evil, fire, and hunger in every house that it was displayed in.

The open lacework of this design reminded me St Brigid’s Cross, which is how the name came about.
_______________________________________________________

This pattern was designed with beautiful drape of silk in mind, but a silk blend yarn would do nicely as well.

What you’ll need:

  • One skein of Alainn Yarns Wayfaring Worsted (51% silk, 49% Bamboo, 250 yds 229 m, worsted weight) or One and a half skeins of Alainn Yarns Silk Road Worsted (100% silk, 125 yds 114 m, worsted weight)

  • US 7 (4.5mm) 20” / 51 cm circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge. Gauge is not critical for this pattern, but it will affect overall amount of yarn used and size of the cowl.

  • Stitch marker (1)

  • Tapestry needle

  • Beads (completely optional) - 616

  • Small crochet hook (1.30 mm) or beading needle to apply beads if desired.
