Brilliant Ombre
I dye yarn with natural materials. It is one of the parts of my life that I love most.
Sometime last Autumn I wanted to make yarn that was even more special by dyeing it ombre.
This means that one color fades into another in a lovely transition. It wasn’t easy learning to
do this. In order to dye yarn in an ombre way I have to first knit the yarn on a knitting
machine into a ‘blank’. I then mordant and dye the blank one color, let it dry, and then
dip dye it the next color. The yarn is then washed, dried, wound on a ball winder,
photographed, re-skeined, re-wetted, it gets the knitted kinks snapped out of it, dried,
and lastly has a hand written fabric label put around it.
A lot of work, yes- but I believe it is worth it!
And it is because of all of this work that I designed this hat to use up the entire skein.
Once the hat is made, all of the rest of the yarn goes into the pom pom!
