The shawl is constructed by casting on a few stitches, then increasing stitches at one edge of the piece, creating an asymmetrical triangle.

Each lace section is a variation on the traditional Old Shale (sometimes called Feather and Fan) pattern, providing a perfect opportunity for beginners to see how slight variations can alter the appearance of the lace.

The pattern keeps it simple ­- there are no increases in the lace sections, as their lateral spread keeps them even with the garter stitch section on either end.
