Hans and Gretel Brinker are the poorest children of all their friends, but they are the richest in spirit. And both are quite resourceful. In order to skate with all the other children, Hans carves wooden skates for his sister and himself. But without steel skates, they have no hope of winning the skating race. Perhaps with enough hard work, both children will have a fighting chance at winning the race’s prize: Silver Skates.

This hat is inspired by the story Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates, first published in 1865 by Mary Mapes Dodge. Ice skating tracks run up the hat. They get smaller towards the crown as if the skaters were moving further into the distance.

The hat is knit from the brim up. An optional pom pom is added at the end. The instructions are charted and written out.
