Brioche and Cables Hat
The hat was inspired by sudden fall of temperatures in February. I realized it is the coldest month of the year and it could be a good idea to get equipped with one more hat. Especially when, after a mild January, it started snowing heavilly.
The hat combines brioche knitting and cabling. It is a panel hat alternating the brioche pattern and garter stitch and they both give it a thick structure and make it warm and cosy.
It can be worked in two style options, beanie or slouch.
Size: One size fits an average adult head.
Level: Adventurous beginner with an Internet access and motivation to learn new things or intermediate familiar with brioche. The hat is knit in the round. The pattern uses long-tail tubular cast on, brioche stitch and cabling.
Circumference: Approximately 51cm (20in) unstretched
Needle size: US 2 ½ / 3mm circular needles (and the same size DPNs if you don’t like the magic loop method). You will also need a stitch marker and tapestry needle for weaving ends.
Gauge: 20 sts and 27 rows in stockinette with US 2 ½ / 3mm needles = 10cm (4in). I knit rather loosely so you may need to go up a needle size (or two) to get the gauge. Remember that brioche knits up very fluffy and normally uses 2 or 3 sizes smaller needle than equivalent in stockinette!
Yarn suggested: 55 (65) grams of any worsted weight yarn that meets the gauge, wool if you want the hat very warm.
