The Brioche Button Cowl does what it says on the label—this quick-knit cowl combines garter stitch and plush brioche ribbing for a cozy neck warmer. It works up fast, but the basic brioche elevates it a bit. (The sample has an excellent velvety feel and look; it is almost hobbitcore.)

All you need to make this cowl is less than a skein of soft aran/worsted weight wool yarn, a few buttons, and a couple of hours.

The tapered button tabs add nice detail to what is really a very simple cowl in straight brioche rib—comfort knitting in brioche for advanced knitters, and a potential good first brioche project for resourceful beginners.

The sample is made from Malabrigo Yarn Worsted in Olive—a deep, luxurious green.

Materials:

  • 137-148 yards of worsted wool yarn—shown in Malabrigo Yarns Worsted in Olive
  • 1 24” circular needle in US5-7/3.75-4.5mm, or size needed for gauge.
  • Tapestry needle
  • removable stitch markers
  • three buttons, wood or other lightweight material, 7/8” or sized to suit yarn
  • optional: needle and thread if buttons are not suited to yarn and tapestry needle

Gauge is 13 sts and 18 rows over 4”/10cm of lightly blocked brioche rib, worked flat.
