This 1-colour beginners Brioche scarf pattern is based on our traditional “Aran” patchwork-style design and the traditional Aran stitches. I designed it to equip you with all stitches necessary to master Brioche.

I would advise you to try and combine each pattern to create your own individual design (or follow my example!). In my opinion Pattern 3 (based on the traditional “Basket Stitch”) is the easiest for beginners with only Brioche knit and purl stitches, Pattern 2 (based on the “Honeycomb Stitch”) adds Brioche increases and decreases to the mix, and Pattern 1 (based on a combination of cables and the “Tree of Life”) really gets you to practice decreases by decreasing 9 stitches all in one go. This will also illustrate to you how increases “warp” and shape your fabric, and how the stocking stitch strips on either side start to curve. Please remember to get in touch anytime you would like some knitting support!

This scarf is very light in weight, yet very warm, and it holds its shape extremely well. Remember that Brioche is reversible, so you can wear your scarf on both sides, and the edges don’t roll.

The fabric is equally beautiful in a solid, traditional “Aran tweed colour” such as here, or in a variegated yarn (a yarn which changes colour within the strand). This pattern is also available as a cowl in 2-colour Brioche in a super chunky yarn. This pattern is free forever, so enjoy!
